Game Overview
Pool Rummy is a points-based variation of the classic Rummy card game where players compete across multiple rounds. Unlike single-deal Rummy, Pool Rummy keeps going until only one player remains below the elimination point threshold — making every decision matter and every round tense.
It's the kind of game that Filipino card enthusiasts — whether you grew up playing tongits with family in Quezon City or tong-its with officemates in Makati — will feel immediately familiar with. The mechanics of drawing, discarding, and forming valid sets and sequences translate directly from local card culture into Pool Rummy's structured competitive format.
At sg77, Pool Rummy is available in both 101-point and 201-point pool formats. The 101-point format is faster and better for newer players, while 201-point tables draw more experienced competitors looking for longer strategic battles. Entry fees range from as low as ₱20 per table, making it accessible whether you're a casual player or a serious grinder.
Game Rules
New to Rummy or just need a refresher? Here's everything you need to know before sitting down at a table on sg77.
Pool Rummy uses two standard 52-card decks plus 2 printed Jokers — 106 cards total. Each player is dealt 13 cards at the start of the game.
Arrange your 13 cards into valid sets (3+ cards of the same rank, different suits) and sequences (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit). You must have at least 2 sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence (no Joker).
On your turn: draw one card from either the open pile or closed deck, then discard one card to the open pile. Continue until you've completed valid melds and can declare.
Each game has a randomly selected Wild Joker card in addition to printed Jokers. Wild Jokers can substitute for any card in an impure sequence or set — but cannot be used in pure sequences.
When your hand is complete (valid melds + 1 discard), press "Declare." If valid, you score 0 points for the round — all other players count their unmelded cards as penalty points.
Declaring with an invalid hand is an automatic penalty of 80 points (101-point pool) or 80 points (201-point pool). This is one of the costliest mistakes in Pool Rummy.
Face cards (K, Q, J, A) = 10 points each. Number cards = face value. Jokers = 0 points. Your penalty score is the sum of all unmelded cards in your hand when another player declares.
In 101-point Pool: a player reaching 101 cumulative points is eliminated. In 201-point Pool: elimination at 201. The last player remaining wins the entire prize pool.
Card Combinations
Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, with no Joker. Example: 4♠ 5♠ 6♠. This is mandatory — you cannot declare a valid hand without at least one pure sequence. It's the backbone of every winning hand.
Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit where a Joker substitutes for one missing card. Example: 4♣ Joker 6♣. Valid as your second required sequence. Use Jokers here to speed up your declaration.
Three or four cards of the same rank from different suits. Example: 8♠ 8♥ 8♦. You cannot have two cards of the same suit in a set. A Joker can complete a set of three if you're missing one suit.
Scoring Reference
Understanding point values is critical because your penalty score equals the total points of all unmelded cards left in your hand when another player declares. High-value cards (A, K, Q, J) left unmelded hurt your score badly.
| Card | Points | Strategy Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 10 pts | High risk if unmelded — prioritize early |
| King (K) | 10 pts | Use in sets across 4 suits easily |
| Queen (Q) | 10 pts | Combine with K-J for pure sequences |
| Jack (J) | 10 pts | Middle-value; flexible for sequences |
| 10 down to 2 | Face value | Lower risk; discard high cards first |
| Joker (any) | 0 pts | Zero penalty — never discard a Joker |
Winning Strategy
Form your pure sequence first — before anything else. Without it, no declaration is valid, no matter how good the rest of your hand looks.
